Since 2018

Andries & Alicia Burger

The husband and wife team behind Tahlia Farm, on the picturesque R62 near Montagu, is known for crafting award-winning gins from the prickly pear plant. This niche farm and distillery is dedicated to producing unique, high-quality spirits and products from one of the Karoo's toughest plants.

Tahlia Farm on Route 62

Chapter one

A picture of a small Karoo town

The farm was bought in 2018 by two people who both have a passion for life and creating. They had a picture of a small Karoo town in their minds when they started to develop the farm out of nothing: no water pipes, no electricity, and a six-year drought.

Chapter two

Why prickly pears?

Because of the arid Karoo soil, they decided to farm with prickly pears. Over the years, a deep understanding of the plant and its distinct flavours and properties was used to create exquisite spirits and, of late, cosmetics. Sustainable farming keeps the plants in harmony with the environment, giving fruit, leaves and oil of exceptional quality.

Chapter three

From fruit and leaf to glass

The ripest prickly pears are handpicked, so only the finest ingredients are used. The fruit lends a subtle, sweet and tangy character to our gins, while the leaves add a delicate herbal essence to the gins and vodka. Johnny King joined the team as specialist advisor.

Meet the people behind Tahlia

Tahlia Farm will succeed not because it is big or small, but because there are people in it who live it, dream it and believe in it.
